Ever since of the pre-Hispanic period, traditions, fairs and dances, among other customs are still alive and make the Pueblan culture a living one. The offerings of the death, famous Flower Fair of Huachinango, the Quetzacoatl Ritual at Cholula, the Flyuers of Cuetzalan, and the Puebla’s Fair, celebrated at the same time as the “Cinco de Mayo Battle” (May 5th battle).

 

 

 

January 17th: The Blessing of the Animals and Seeds: it is a ritual that is celebrated on January 17th almost all over the country. It is Saint Anthony of Abad Day. He was the protector of animals. People take their seeds or animals to the atrium of their church to be blessed. In each town, the ritual is celebrated according to their own traditions. On Corpus Thursday, a similar celebration occurs.

 

February 5th: The Anniversary of the Constitution (1917). Everyone has this day off.

 

March 21st: The Birthday of Benito Juarez.

 

May 5th: The Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla (1862). It is the most important civic and historical holiday in the State. There is a parade and a special celebration in all the municipalities. The most showy and renown parade is in Puebla City, where people perform a simulation of the famous battle against the French soldiers. Everyone has this day off.

 

September 15th and 16th: Mexican Independence Day. This is the most important civic and historical holiday in the country. On the 15th, at 11 pm, the President of Mexico, the governors of each state and mayors, five the so-called, “Grito de Dolores” (cry of Dolores). They ring bells symbolizing the original bells that rang in 1810 to announce the beginning of a battle for the independence of their country. This night, the city squares or “zocalos”, of all the cities are full of people who go there to hear the “Grito de Dolores”. Following this “grito”, they participate in organized festivities which include: fireworks, music, dancing, regional food, booths and many other activities.

 

November 20th: Revolution Day (1910). A great parade which is dedicated to sports takes place on this holiday. Everyone also has this day off.
