The mansion of the king’s lieutenant

The mansion of the king’s lieutenant, built in the 18th century, houses a permanent exhibition of viceregal art showing the customs of the time.

Baluartes de la Soledad, San Carlos, Santa Rosa and Santiago

These fortifications, now housing museums for permanent or temporary displays, were originally built to defend the city against pirate raids.

San Jose el Alto Fort

On top of the Cerro de Bellavista, formerly Cerro de la Vigía Vieja, stands a late 18th century fort. Its flat roof commands a superb view of the city and sea.

San Miguel Fort

This fort, now converted into a museum, is the most striking and imposing of all the fortifications because of its size and layout. It has a pentagonal ground plan and still retains its moat, drawbridge, watchtowers and cannons.
